Under Construction - Very Not Complete

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WEBCOMICS (The ratings are the best I can think of at the moment. Most PG's were earned by a certain violence / blood content, but I am known to be on the conservative side of that particular issue...)

Independent (as far as I know):

  • Kevin and Kell (G, daily)
3-panel. Family-style comic, a bit too quirky for mainstream publishing, about a rabbit married to a wolf in a world where herbivores and carnivores still do their regular thing, even though they live in modern-style housing and use computers. This is like reading newspaper comics, only better than almost all of those.
  • Sluggy Freelance (PG, daily)
3-panel. The granddaddy of webcomics, it's eclectic, cheesy and generally funny even though its target audience is mainly single guys. The name has apparently nothing to do with this incarnation. (I'm SURE I remember a version of this comic when it was actually about slugs on pogosticks (one of whom was a freelance reporter), but Pete won't admit to that now...)
  • Acid Reflux (G-PG, 1X a day week month! if you're lucky)
3-panel. Somewhat Manga-inspired fantasy-type series with a cool fierce woman warrior (yay!), a bishounen wizard, a Chibooyah Cult renegade and a hunky werefox, etc. assisting God (a cute little girl) on her quest to find the owner's manual for her universe. Very funny, a great read and one of my favorites. Used to be daily, but the creators are too busy now. :(
  • Eversummer Eve (G-PG, Mondays)
Page(s). The best dang Manga-shoujo-art-style(but not excessively) fantasy comic I've ever found on the web. Story is very interesting too. Set in the modern world. I sincerely hope this gets published in book format someday!
  • Journey to the West (PG, random)
Page(s). Humor, aliens, Zen mysticism and profound spiritual views all wrapped up in the beautiful full-color-painting American Southwest world of Jack Crazyquilt, the Zen Coyote.
  • Outsider (G so far, weekly?)
Page. New, full-color (I just discovered it 12/31/01). Science Fiction, appears to be Standard Formula Space Opera stuff. Art a bit reminiscent of Don Bluth. I suppose I shall keep an eye on it for a while...
  • Ceph (R+ (full frontal artwork), weekly)
Page, varies. To steal verbatim from the artists page: "See there's this alien that's been living on the Earth for a long, long time as a biologist, anthropologist, ambassidor, whatever. Ceph is a human that was created by this being in order to communicate with, and better understand this goofy little race it's had to live with for so many years. This story begins near the end of Ceph's term of service as an earthling. The sun's going nova and every living thing on Earth has either fled or died off, so Ceph's out of a job. So she goes off back home to her people fully expecting to get herself merged into their collective and not have to worry about being human anymore. Boy was she wrong! They made her too well, and she can't stop being human. So her other half, the alien part of her makes a shell around itself for her to live in and they take off. They wander aimlessly for a while until her alien half, "the ship", creates another human to keep her company. Turns out he's a pain in the ass, but at the very least he's driven her to do something other than just mope around in deep space. Now they're off to find the scattered remnants of the human race, but first they've got to go back to Earth to look up their number... "

Hosted on Keenspot:

  • Clan of the Cats (PG-13, daily)
3-panel. Horror-fantasy, sometimes humorous, sometimes dark, about a were-panther witch (both storybook-ish AND Pagan) named Chelsea dealing with the family curse.
  • Cool Cat Studio (PG, on hiatus)
3-panel. French-Canadian (there is a French version online as well :) ) strip about the (mis)adventures of a group of people who work at a graphic arts studio. Classic Euro-style "chibi"-ish art, which has gotten less "chibi"-ish over time.
  • The Wandering Ones (PG, weekdays)
3-panel. Post-apocalyptic Native-American-style Scout Clans and an Alliance VS. an evil Reich that has control of most of North America.

Hosted on Keenspace:

  • Ancient Messages (G-PG, weekdays)
Page. Goth-y, Gorey-art-influenced saga of a young modern teenager and her inherited task as a fighter of other-dimensional evils, but not at all like "Buffy". Very well written with excellent "atmosphere".
  • Okashina Okashi (PG13 (mention of adult subjects), T-Th-S)
Page. Manga-style comic whose title translates as "Strange Candy" about a group of teens and young adults who are "FOOMed" off Tokyo Tower into the alternate worlds of UberTokyo (run by an Evil Overlord, of course) and others. Very funny. My older kid loves it, while I hope some of it definitely goes over her head. Lots of bishounen humor, & cool female characters (one has access to Hammerspace! <grin>).
  • Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan (PG, weekdays)
Different formats. In English, from an artist in the Netherlands. Medieval-world fantasy-type strip, in a noticeably European comic art style (ie: occasional nudity), about the (mis)adventures of the members of a small gang of rogues. The witches in this comic are also both storybook-ish and Pagan.
  • Fate Martyr Sapheire (G-PG, 1-2X a week)
Page. Fantasy-world story with humans, others, and a teenaged bishounen from an almost-extinct race (the title character) who is supposed to fulfill an old prophecy. Manga-style artwork. This artist does incredibly beautiful hair, eyes, trees.
  • Neon Umbra (PG, rare and random)
Multi-panel. (Chiaki's art is really superb; check out her art link! Definitely a student of both American comic art and Manga.) Starring a PS2-obsessed underachieving teenage girl who gets involved with the Garou (that's werewolves, si vous ne parlez pas le Francais). Looks like it's aimed at gamers and people younger than me, but I keep visiting the site from time to time.
  • Lovarian Adventures (PG, Mondays)
Page. Fantasy-world quest-type story with a group of adventurers and an evil ruler from the past trying to reacquire power. Somewhat D'nD-ish in flavor.
  • Fans (R, weekdays)
Page. My college Science Fiction Fan Club was never like THIS. I would have rated it mainly PG-PG13 until the Alisin character showed up.
  • Tang's Weekly Comic (PG13-R, Sundays)
Page. Very silly stuff from a Chinese-Canadian artist, starring Taoist Priestess / Kung Fu artist Phenix, and various others. Tang's site has other good stuff on it, like a comic art tutorial, etc. His other comic (a definite NC17) is at occasional times tamer than the regular one (!). Links to other comics, including a collaboration he does with a very infamous webcomic artist (now appearing under a new pseudonym).
  • Boy meets Boy (R, daily)
Multi-panel. Roommates Harley and Mikhael (yes, they ARE a couple) and their Landlady from Hell, Harley's band, other assorted friends and relatives. Very cute.
